This book covers a large gamut of things of interest to fishermen and contains many useful tips for rigging your boat/gear. As a long-time fisherman but new boat owner, I found this book encourages you to think outside the box in how you use your boat and tackle. I found a lot of value in the author’s many years of experience fishing the Chesapeake (my area), and the fishing tips that come across in his descriptions of the projects. I would point out that a few of the projects are homemade versions of things that are now available in your local boating store or tackle shop (ex. pvc rod holders, built-in tackle box storage, tool holders, etc), and a few are perhaps even a little hokey–something you might only do with an older boat or to save a few bucks. However, the gamut of material this book covers from aluminum to fiberglass boats, rigs to rod repairs, etc. should appeal to all kinds of anglers. Some projects are great for those who are looking to make some of their own accessories; other projects feature practical tips that would be helpful to even the experienced angler.

I enjoy reading this book to see his many interesting ideas. Having said this, the book doesn’t contain any ground breaking idea or any “must have” idea. Still, it is an interesting book that I don’t mind reading.

Although white would have been more appropriate for my boat, at the time gray was going for $19, and what do I care, I’m fishin! *NOTE* If color is that important to you, and you can wait, keep checking back, because the discounted color keeps changing. Not sure why, probably something to do with supply & demand. Other than that, the quality of the construction is fine, base of seat is plastic/composite (?), better than my old seat (plywood) the bolster at the back of the seat could be stiffer, or more firm, and its way too early to know how the vinyl will hold up over time. All in all, if you can wait for your color to go on sale, it’s one heck of bargain.

As far as this class of inflatable boats, its the best I have been in. The seats are large and very comfortable. The boat is big, wide, very stable and is easy to row with only 2 oars even with 2 guys in it weighing over 200lbs. I have been on Lake Ponchartrain with it twice, wind and waves in open water, no problems. So its a really good lake or sea boat and I suppose it will do well in rivers and inland waterways too. Tried it in the lake with a Minn Kota Endura 30lb thrust electric motor today for the first time. This thing runs around at a quick brisk pace with that motor. Used a deep cycle marine battery with 120 capacity and it lasted for hours of constant running with only a half charge. Then, out of no where the weather got bad and I mean bad. Wind picked up to at least 30mph with gusts even higher, waves kicked up to full white caps. At first me and my bud thought we could be in trouble, that was until I kicked the motor up to full speed and it brought us back in without much sweat. It passed the test and it could be one of the better motors for this boat and you can get it for only $100. Great boat, nice setup. It belongs to my bud, I just ordered me the boat and motor mount. I will be getting the same setup. I also recommend a minn kota trolling motor power center. It has a battery gauge that can work as a ‘fuel’ gauge and tell you how much capacity is left and two 12v plug ins for CD players, VHF radios, GPSs or whatever you want. Even a cool refrigerator ice chest.

Overall, I am pleased with the boat. It has held air very well. The oars could possibly be a little longer. I don’t see it holding 4 people unless they are midgets. I live on a small 10 acre lake and it is great for getting around. I like the reinforced areas around the oars. I was concerned about the pump,but it didn’t take very long to inflate it.overall, great boat. Thanks so much. Dave M.

As an apartment dweller in Michigan who loves to fish a little boat was on the top of my list to purchase. A boat that could be stored easily and compactly was a must. We have now used this boat several times on a small lakes.

Now the details; the overall quality was even higher than expected. The material seems to be heavy duty, and you do not feel like it could rupture at anytime. The listed capacity for this boat is 880 lbs and with only about 400 lbs (2 people and gear) it floats surprisingly high out of the water which makes it feel like a boat and not a pool toy. As an added bonus it uses a double hull design and as stated in the included materials even if the main (exterior hull completely deflates the craft can stay afloat. The included pump works, if you are using this every weekend you may want to upgrade. I found the included oars functional and they seem to be holding up well. A great advantage of an inflatable is the storage it is fairly compact especially given the overall size of the boat, and it actually fits back in its included carry bag with no problems. We even had enough space left in the carry bag to store two life vests.

The only problem with the excursion 4 is maneuverability in the wind. It is much easier to handle on a calm day, so if you live in a windy area an inflatable may not be for you. Overall I would highly recommend this boat and the price is well worth it.

I bought this ‘rubber boat’ and put the motor mount on it,to use a trolling motor for fishing,,,,but i cant repair the leak’s fast enough to use it..ITS JUST A TOY…its not worth the headache,,I gave it to the neighbor kids..I’m looking for a 10 ft alum jon boat..

In my area there are often times we have to deal with wind and waves when trying to load your boat. With these “guide ons” are a real life saver especially when the launches are crowded. Great buy, easy to install and work perfect!!

The item pictured is not the real item, nor the item shipped. Product received was the PVC 5′ tall trailer guides………NOT THE ROLLER AS PICTURED. I even called Overton, before purchase, and they were very nice and congenial, but even they couldn’t be exactly sure of the identity of the item. Ultimately they stated that they figured that it was like the one pictured…NOT. Price was right, delivered proptly…so I just took it and made it work, even though it was not the item I thought I ordered, and talked to Marty at “Overton” about. He was very nice, but not it. Thanks anyway, Allan

As a new owner of a 25 foot powerboat, I was eager to delve into this book and learn about the systems on my boat. The description here led me to believe that this book would be pertinent.

I did not find it helpful. The author excludes outboard motors from discussion. Six of the ten chapters don't pertain at all to boats like mine: Engine Basics (because outboards are excluded), Freshwater Plumbing, Marine Toilets, Stoves, Sinks, and Refrigeration, Sailboat Rigging, and Getting Ready for the Big Trip.

Relatively few new boat owners begin with a boat of a size that typically includes such features. If the description had more accurately described what one would find inside, I would have saved my money. Rating: 2 / 5

Mr. Sollers covers the systems that make a boat work with a considerable amount of humor. For example, he calls boat owning a disease, an addiction. He says there should be organizations to help. I’ve gotten a lot of laughs out of this volume, some darned good advice too. It’s a must have book, especially for someone who is new to boats and has never had a wrench in his hand.
